Title: The Nature of Love
Summary: Set during "Crazy Love." Why was Hank still at the bus depot when he and Divya saw each other?
"You're lucky, you know? Jill's a real catch." Katie told Hank.
"Yeah, I know she—"
"You better not hurt her," the blonde warned Hank just before she boarded her bus.
Lawson stood still, pondering her final words for a moment before he began to leave the bus depot. As he thought about what he had learned about Jill's romantic history in the last few days, he was so preoccupied, he bumped into another man. "Oh, sorry," Hank mumbled before he continued on.
Ahead of him was a truck selling ice cream treats and frozen custard, and in a rare moment of abandonment from his healthy diet, he decided to have some custard while he thought about his and Jill's relationship. Would they last, or only end up being a summer fling? He didn't know.
Heaving a sigh, he turned back in the direction of the buses to do some peoplewatching while he ate his dish of custard. One woman in particular caught his eye as she was better dressed than most of the people at the depot, who were wearing casual clothes.
Hank forgot about his custard as he realized the woman was Divya, and that the man he had bumped into was approaching her. He took a step closer, squinting to get a better focus as Divya and the man exchanged a few words. Something told Hank that the man was not a family member of Divya's. He had never asked Divya about her romantic life, so he was naturally curious when the man leaned in and kissed her cheek in a goodbye. Then Hank's eyes widened as Divya suddenly grabbed the man's face and kissed him passionately. Nope, definitely not family, he thought.
His surprise turned into concern as he watched Divya and her boyfriend speak again, then the man continued to his bus. Hank absently tossed his unfinished custard in the trash as he began making his way towards Divya. He stopped for a moment as he registered the look of sadness on her face before she turned and saw him.
"Hey," he said softly. "Are you okay?" he asked, feigning cluelessness. He didn't want her to know that he had seen what had happened.
Divya shook her head, her usually composed face betraying her emotions as tears welled up in her eyes. Hank wordlessly gave her a hug, letting her hold onto him as long as she wanted.
After a long moment, he heard her ask, "What are you doing here?"
"I…came to see Katie off," he managed to say. "I told her Evan was crushed that she was leaving."
Divya sniffed and pulled away, wiping at her eyes. "I'm sure he is."
Hank smiled and turned so that he was standing beside her. He looked over at the ice cream truck, then back at her. "Hey, you want some frozen custard? It might cheer you up. My treat."
Divya let out a laugh. "I'd be delighted. Thank you."
They walked towards the truck in silence, both of them pondering the nature of love.
Author's Notes: So, I didn't understand why Hank was still apparently at the bus depot long enough to see Divya after Raj had left her. I noticed an ice cream/custard truck in the background and came up with this explanation.
