Puss sat in his cell, bored out of his mind. This was the 5th time he had been put into incarceration. This time he had stolen some milk form a wealthy family. It was only a gallon or two. He had been caught halfway to his destination. If the sheriff had listened to the explanation and had not just made assumptions, he would have learned that he was taking the milk to some kittens on the far side of town. They were abandoned, malnourished, and had no money for food. But of course, the "law" didn't want excuses. He just hoped that his partner, Kitty Soft Paws had made it to the kittens.
There was a loud clang from outside and puss sat up, startled. Their was a thump from out side the doors, and the click of a lock being opened. The door swung in slowly, a creaking noise resounding. Puss hesitated.
"Well? Are you going to come with me or stay in there all day?" Came a voice. Puss quickly scampered to the door. Kitty stood in front of the door, twirling the keys around in her fingers.
"What would I do with out you?"
She handed him his hats, boots and sword, which he hurriedly replaced in their respective places. He nodded to her and looked up at a window near by. She grinned.
"My thoughts exactly."
Puss jumped up on the ledge, Kitty following behind. They crawled along the edge until they came to the roof. It was slanted upwards, the edge of it dropping down to the next building, a home. They scurried over the top and jumped down, onto the house. Yells came from the Jailhouse and the pair looked at each other. The roof they were on was too high to jump off of, even if they landed on their feet. Puss glanced around and formulated a plan. He motioned for her to follow his as he walked to the edge off the roof. He grabbed kitty and whispered. "Hold on. Tight." She nodded and wrapped her paws over his shoulders. Puss sliced the rope beneath them and grabbed hold. They swung downward, towards the next house. Right before they slammed into the wall, Puss jumped, landing on the ground. Kitty let go of him and they ran off into the night.
Puss and Kitty sat by each other next to a fire they had made, warming themselves.
"Thanks for saving me." Puss said, breaking the silence. "For the 3rd time."
Kitty laughed. "No problem, Don Juan." She purred. "Maybe sometime, you can return the favor. That is, if I ever get caught. Which, as we both know, will never happen."
Puss laughed. "Are you implying you're uncatchable? You can slip through anyone's fingers like sand?"
Kitty thought for a moment. "Yes, as a matter of fact, I am."
"Wanna challenge that theory?" Puss said, wiggling his eyebrows. Kitty winked at him and stood, heading off into the dessert. AS she left, she called over her shoulder:
"Catch me if you can!"
