You Were There

Conversation

"Listen!
'Tis the voice
I hear in my dreams.
Can you not see?
What...welcome light
Springs not to your eyes?"

"Oh, foolish Arwen!
'Tis only Estel."
"Aye, but for a moment
Methought
'Twas my beloved one."

Confession

Speak not to me
I know not what to say
The heart captured
Caught, made mortal
In one word, "love."
How can foolishness
Act so like the timid deer
Fleeing one instant
Pressed against you
The next? Why?
What say you?
Now I'll hear those words...
"Farewell" and "I love thee"
Spoken in the same breath.
'Tis cruel.
But not so cruel
As to live
And never know love.

Morning

Does it break
Shatter to pieces
All rays of dark?
(For darkness
Spreadeth itself
in rays, as does light)
Or does it come
softly, stealing quiet
with a lover's whisper--
"Come, sweet one!
We must be up and gone!"?
Or rather greet me
Like an old friend
"Good morning, dawn."

You Were There

What do I see?
Far off in the distance
Faint as fireflies
Fair as starlight?
The message that you
Bring, what is it?
Oh, strange being
Do not leave me--
Stay, stay a while
And I will take you
To the golden tree.
You are the one
That was by my side
In the darkest night
When the Sea itself
Could not hold my tears
You held me
Gentle as Varda's holy hand
Soft as the warm dry sand
You were there--
And I shall never forget...
The smile on your face.

Friend

Friend, do you hear me?
Do you know who I am?
If you really love me
Why don't you understand?
Friend, do you see this?
Don't you comprehend?
I must bid farewell
To you-and life without end.
We played together--
Oh, I wish we could play forever--
But those days have their end
'Tis why I bid goodbye
To you--my dear friend.

You Said Goodbye

There was sunshine
On the forest floor
The day that you
Walked through the door
You said goodbye--
I wondered why.
There was moonlight
It was so bitter cold
The day you left
I grew so old
You said goodbye--
I wondered why.
There was no light
In those halls of stone
(Where once you
Took me for your own).
You said goodbye--
I could not cry--
You said goodbye
And I said, "Why?"
