Background:
Madara Uchiha is the legendary founder of the Uchiha clan and one of the founders of Konoha. At first, it was just him and his brother who possessed the Sharingan. But, there was such fierce competition between Madara and his brother that they both jumped to the level beyond. They both achieved the Mangekyou Sharingan. After achieving it, they became very powerful and were around during the founding of Konoha. The brothers who would become the First and Second Hokages were part of a clan that banded together with the Uchiha to form Konoha.
Eventually, the side effects of Madara's Mangekyou Sharingan caused him to become blind. Because he would not accept this, he decided to kill his own brother and take his Mangekyou Sharingan. When he took the eyes from his brother, the two pairs of Mangekyou mixed and created the "eternal" Mangekyou Sharingan. It was after he achieved this that he joined the First Hokage.
After the founding of Konoha, the differences in how Madara and the First Hokage intended to run the village became evident. This led to their legendary battle at the Valley of the End, where they now have statues commemorating the fight.
Years later, Madara created the Akatsuki so that he could hide in the shadows as Tobi. He then tamed the Kyuubi with his Mangekyou Sharingan and had it attack Konoha. It ended up being sealed inside of a young child by the Fourth Hokage and Madara's plans were foiled once again. His next course of action was to train Itachi Uchiha to help him slaughter the remaining Uchihas, with the exception of Sasuke Uchiha.
