"You did what?"

Mako sighed, sucking in a deep breath of the brittle air that hung around them. He knew he had to tell her but doing it had been much harder than he could have thought of. Shakily, his eyes moved from the snow at their feet back to her eyes.

"I broke up with you." It was as soft as he could make it, but it still burned his throat as he whispered it.

"And…I.."He tried to swallow the lump in his throat as he took her hands in his as he prepared himself for what she was about to do to him. "I'm so sorry but….I kind of…got back with Asami…"

Korra's shoulders stiffened as a range of emotions washed over her. Talking was the least of her worries right now. Had those six months not meant anything to him? Had he just…forgotten about her while she was away? Her blue eyes were staring at their hands and she wondered if she should be doing this if he and Asami were 'together.' A hard blink got rid of the thought. Shifting through the soot that just suddenly built up was the important task and she was hoping, as she shifted through it, that she could find a plausible emotion to react with.

Mako's eyes stayed glued to her face, waiting for an outburst. A slap, tears… hell… anything but silence. But that was what he was getting. A dazed and silent Avatar could never result in a great way. The more the silence dragged on the more he could feel his heart beat so rough it could burst out of his chest.

Was this the end for them?

Were they over for good?

He couldn't find it in his heart to give her up. Sure, he had screwed up. Actually, he had screwed up worse than he ever had before. All he could do now was show her he wasn't ever going to act like that again, apologize to her, and let her know that if she still wanted him, he was there.

And after a few good minutes, her eyes traveled back to his but he was completely unable to read them.

"Mako…"
