Will had to admit that since coming to the Sanctuary the word odd had taken a whole new definition. But the sight of Ashley Magnus refusing to enter the kitchen was an oddity that had nothing to do with her home. Or maybe it did, he needed to ask her to be sure. "Ashley!" he called. "What's up?"
Ashley turned to him with a scowl. "Where's mom?" she demanded, "I paged her."
"Yeah but she sent me instead," Will shrugged. "So what's going on?"
"Isn't her daughter worth it?" Ashley snapped.
"I have no idea," Will admitted with a sigh. "But if you need help, I'm ready to offer it."
Ashley looked him over as if she doubted that he could actually take care of what ever was bugging her. Will was beginning to wonder if she was right. "Kitchen," she growled.
Will raised an eyebrow. "There's a problem with the kitchen?"
"No," Ashley snapped with a roll of her eyes, "It's in the kitchen. That' awful, huge thing in there." She gave a deep shudder at the thought of it.
Will gave her a once over but there was clearly no way Ashley was going to go near the kitchen. So Will, against his better judgment, began to creep in that direction. When he got close he flattened himself against the wall so that he could just peak around. After all if it was bad enough to scare thrill seeker and monster hunter Ashley Magnus then he was sure it had to be pretty dangerous. He spared a thought as to why Magnus would send him down here before leaning around the corner and saw...
Nothing. The kitchen looked as normal as ever. There was no horrible monster, no bloody thirsty creature. Just the normal kitchen that they each saw every day. Will turned back to Ashley. "I don't see anything," he told her.
"It's in there," she insisted.
Will looked again but still came up with nothing. "Okay could you be a little more specific as to where in there it is?"
Ashley grudgingly made her way to the doorway. "Its right there," she said pointing to a corner.
Will studied the corner. "I don't see anything," he commented.
"I'm telling you it's there." She was nearly yelling now.
Will peered at the corner. He could still see nothing so he decided to make his way into the kitchen and check it out.
He didn't notice it until he was nearly standing in the corner. Up at the very top he saw a small, ordinary, black spider. "Is this it?" he asked, "This little spider?"
Ashley averted her eyes as he went to pick it up. "Yes that's it and if you'll please just squash it, we can all move on."
Will reached up and gently plucked the spider from its web. He cradled the tiny creature in his hand as he walked to Ashley. "It's just a little spider," he chuckled. "It won't hurt you."
Ashley nearly tripped in her hurry to get away from him. "Do not bring that thing any closer," she warned, "or I swear to god I will make sure you never have children."
Will stared at her. "Alright, I'll stay in the doorway if it makes you feel better."
"It doesn't," she snapped. "Now will you please kill it?"
"I won't kill it," Will snorted. "It's a harmless spider. But if you'd like I'll set it outside instead."
Ashley looked very frustrated. "Fine," she huffed. "Do what you want. Just keep it away from me."
Will rolled his eyes and carried the spider out side were he deposited it on a tree branch. "Good luck little guy," he said quietly. As he made his way back to his office he reflected on the events. It was clear now that while Magnus understood Ashley's phobia, every so often she got sick of dealing with it. Will understood. He'd once ha a foster mother that was afraid of mice. Every time she saw something scurry across the floor she'd scream bloody murder. Everyone would come running only to find it was a bug or some lint or anything else completely non threatening.
But Will had to admit, it was nice to know that Ashley was in some ways just as normal as everyone else.
