Change of Plans

She had planned this evening for a while. Atae was with Sango, and she had spent a good bit of the day making noodles and slow cooking skewered pork, and making sure that the house was clean and the futon and bedding aired out, and it was just perfect.

And then a youkai had shown up.

Kagome sighed, and lifted the kettle off of the fire, pouring hot water into a cup filled with herbs. Behind her, InuYasha moaned as he stirred in on the futon, his black hair cascading over the edge of the bedding.

The attack had come very late in the afternoon. She had felt the youki of the invader and had run out with her arrows. Following their yells, she had discovered her husband wounded, leaning on his sword as the oni bled out on the ground not far from their house. As the sun set, she put the oni out of its misery with one quick arrow in a flash of pink light, and then helped her husband home.

She picked up the medicine cup and went to sit next her husband. His violet eyes marked with the pain of his injuries, searched her face as he grabbed her hand.

"I'm sorry. I spoiled your plans," he said.

Smiling ruefully, she squeezed his hand and helped him up enough to drink the medicine. "Not your fault. Stupid oni. You'll feel better in the morning."

He swallowed the medicine, frowning at its taste. "Yeah, but I was looking forward to the noodles," he said, touching her cheek. "Tastes a lot better than medicine."

She laughed. "You're in luck. I haven't cooked them yet. We'll eat them tomorrow."

Closing his eyes, he snuggled up and rested his cheek on her thigh. "Yeah, I am lucky. You're here, aren't you? That's the luckiest thing of all."

His voice drifted off as the medicine worked and sleep claimed him. Adjusting his blankets one last time, she kissed his forehead, and went back to the fire where she picked up her sewing and began her long night's watch.
