Don't let him see me, don't let him see me, Lily mentally pleaded. But of course, her curly red hair always gave her away.

"HEY, HEY LIL-AY!" a familiar, arrogant voice called out. James popped up behind her with a goofy grin on his face.

"Size down your head a bit, Potter, people are beginning to stare," Lily glared at him. James's facial expression didn't change

"This act you put on amuses me, Evans," James smirked.

"What act?" Lily asked in disgust.

"The whole 'I really don't like you' act."

"It's not an act, I really hate you, Potter."

"Hate is a strong word," James pointed out, still smiling.

"Not strong enough," Lily told him with a roll of her eyes.

"Oh well, at least I know that you think of me."

"Who gave you that sick idea?"

"No one, but you put so much effort into despising me that I must be crossing your mind often," James explained smugly.

"You make sure of that, don't you?" Lily assumed, becoming more and more frustrated. She felt the anger building up as he continued to follow her.

"Yep, one day you'll come to your senses and give me a chance."

"If that day ever comes I'll be out of this country faster than you would believe is possible."

"With me, of course. If you don't want to stay in England we could always elope somewhere else."

"James, just leave me alone."

"I get it; you want time to think about the offer."

"No, I want you to leave so I have time away from you for once," Lily said harshly.

"You really don't like me, do you?"

"We've already been through this."

"I just don't get it," James shrugged.

"You don't GET IT?" Lily was furious, "Why should I like you, at all? What's there to like about you? You're self-confidence makes me want to vomit. You're arrogant and egotistical and just annoying! Leave me alone. There are so many other unpleasant things that I'd rather be doing than talking to you."

James looked at her and Lily made eye contact. She saw his smile fade and pain cloud his eyes. She didn't realize how horrible she sounded, nor did she mean any of it. Lily stood there with her mouth hung open, not knowing what to say.

"I…uh…I," Lily stammered, knowing apologies wouldn't cut it. She hadn't meant to be that mean. She didn't even feel that much hatred for him.

"You've said enough, Lily," James shook his head, "You know, sometimes I really try to hate you. I know that would make you so much happier. But in the end, I just end up hating myself for trying," James turned around and walked down the empty hallway, leaving Lily regretful and in tears.
