Odysseus

For Mike

Always the awakening was the same

Murky and cold, the unsympathetic morning waiting ever so patiently

As he was to expect once, twice more

Yesterday and the moments before he obeyed the cruel dawn's dirge

The lingering rhythm of each day's passing dragging him a little farther

Each time he succumbs and surrenders his spirit

Only for liberty to show itself just within him

And just once more he reaches out

What has happened before always seems so remarkable

But logic, his other captor, throws him back on course

Once again it takes control and he is

Nothing but a drudge to his own desires

He may look back some day and think of it little

Why it happened, why it began

For now he can hold on and allow his confinement

But to escape he must first learn to break away from himself

And only then can he come home

Mike, though you don't know him, was once a good friend of mine, but we no longer communicate, as he is ignorant and prejudicial, trapped within a box of the lies he's been spoon-fed since birth.
