Tom Paris had retired to Earth.
He was an old man now, and his grandchildren gathered around him.
It was a warm summer night, and while light pollution spoiled much of the night sky on Paris' home planet, that was not the case at his home.
The children were stargazing, using a simple telescope from a much earlier time.
B'Elanna had given it to Tom as a gift long ago, knowing his penchant for all things twentieth century.
It was rarely used, but the children always enjoyed its novelty.
Tonight was no exception.
Evan looked through the lens and grinned.
"I see the rings of Saturn!" he exclaimed, as only a seven year old can.
The other two children crowded around the boy, each fighting for their own chance to see.
A debate about what the rings looked like quickly escalated into a small shoving match between the two boys, while the only girl on the porch quietly refocused the lens.
Tom smiled at his granddaughter and looked to the sky.
His grandchildren noticed his speech in answer to their debate, but they dismissed it as the ramblings of an old man.
After all, it was only one word.
"Rain."
