Your Guardian Angel

A/N: I'm unsure about this one. I meant it to end a bit different, but I think it turned out alright. I got the inspiration from the song Your Guardian Angel by The Red Jumpsuit apparatus, it's one of my favourites and has actually got me through some tough times as well. I'd love to know what you think, so please review : )

Things used to be simple.

It was always James and Lily and Lily and James. They were so certain, so perfect, so... in love.

In the early hours of the morning, she would sneak into his dorm and they would lay together, listening to eachothers' heart beats.

Evenings were spent strolling about the castle, hand-in-hand. Ducking into broom cubbards when the opportunity arose.

Nights were warmed by the glow of the fire, where they would laugh together for hours on end about nothing at all.

But his favourites were afternoons. They would take refuge under their beech tree on the Black Lake's shores, and he would hold her for hours.... just happy to be alive.

Lately there had been no "they."

Most of the time, she kept herself locked in her dorm.

Her eyes were always looking at the floor. On the rare occasions they made eye contact, he was afraid to see them. Those eyes did not belong to Lily Evans. They were blank, expressionless.... Her smile was so forced, even it failed to reach them.

Her studies were suffering, once the top of their class at potions, she now ranked below the top ten.

She always seemed so distracted.... He would catch her staring into nothingness in the middle of a lesson.

When he asked her friends, they told him they were just as clueless as he was.

He needed to know.

"...Lily?"

She remained motionless, gazing into the fire.

He sat down beside her. He couldn't take it anymore.

"Please....Lily...."

She looked up, stared at him without really seeing him and gave an empty smile.

"Yeah, James?"

He sighed.

"I love you."

She smiled the same smile, though it faded a little.

"I know."

He grabbed her hand.

"Fancy a walk?"

She nodded her head slowly.

Her hand felt cold in his as they walked out the portrait hole together.

He led her out into the warm spring night, down to their beech tree which seemed to glow in the light of the moon.

They sat braced against the tree as a pleasant breeze caressed them, just as they always did.

Again, she looked away from him- up at the moon.

He watched her, drawing tiny circles on her leg with his finger.

Suddenly, her eyes filled with tears. She didn''t try to hide them.

She looked at him.

"James.... What are we doing?"

He looked back.

"Sitting."

She bit her lip as though she was fighting back a laugh.

"I mean us."

He blinked.

"What do you mean?"

She wiped her tears on her sleeve.

"I don't know anymore...."

He lifted her chin with his finger.

"Lily.... I love you."

She closed her eyes.

"Are you sure?"

He wiped a tear rolling down her face with his thumb.

"I have never been so sure of anything in my life."

This brought a fresh set of tears to her eyes.

"What's this really about?"

She moved her chin out of his grasp and pointed it downward.

"It's just.... this war.... people dying every day.... I don't want anymore of it...."

She looked into his eyes again.

"I'm scared."

He pulled her into an embrace. She rested her head into his chest.

"Don't be...you have me."

"That's what I'm afraid of.... Loosing you...."

She measured her breathing with his. He stroked her hair.

"Lily... I love you. I am yours forever and always."

"Promise?"

"Swear."

She looked at him once more, her eyes now full of meaning, certainty....
