Yang Xiao Long was unwanted by her mother. At least that's how she had felt when she was old enough to understand the meaning of abandonment. She was left with her father who, two years later, had become the father of another little girl with silver eyes. She had a mother figure, and two father figures, her uncle Qrow being one of them. She had an adorable little sister. She had this happy family, but there was always this little hole in her heart, that her mother Raven had made when she left her daughter.
Yang had always felt guilty about this hole, because Summer was there, and Summer treated her like her own daughter. Summer wanted her as a daughter, as a person, where her own biological mother had not. Yang never told her how much she meant to her. So when Summer committed suicide it hurt even more, she had more guilt. As Summer had passed, she had taken the light from her father's world, leaving little of it behind. Her uncle Qrow had taken to caring for the two children. He taught them life lessons, he made sure they ate for all three meals, made sure the went to school and got good grades. He took over being their dad when Taiyang had buried himself in work to keep the pain at bay.
When Qrow died, that hole in Yang's heart got even bigger. And darkness engulfed her father. He stopped working, and he didn't restart caring for them. He started drinking, making the two young girls run the house. Yang started working to bring in money, she made sure they had food, and kept their home. Made sure Ruby above all else was secure and safe. She kept what was left of their family together.
It was stressful, and it was painful. She didn't have much time to mourn the loss of her uncle, she never properly got to accept his death. There was a large hole in her heart now and the only thing keeping her from falling apart was the fact that she needed to protect her adorable little sister with hope-filled silver eyes. Her love for her sister was all that kept her from hitting the same place their father had, and for that she was eternally grateful for her baby sister.
