"Holy shit," Andy hissed as L walked in. She yanked her robe closed, straightening.
L's eyes widened slightly in shock and he raised his hands. "Sorry, sorry," he said, turning around and sidling back out of the room.
"Can I come in?" he asked after a moment of silence, and Andy nodded before hasitly adding, "Yeah, I guess."
L came back in. He approached Andy cautiously, slowly, in his usual slouching gate, and then stopped a meter or two away from her.
"So," he said, "you're a girl."
Andy twisted her lips and said flatly, "I was born with two x chromosomes and began shedding my inner organs monthly when I turned 12."
"You're implying that you're not a girl by stating that you are," L noted quietly, his expression unchanging, and Andy shrugged.
"You are a girl?" L asked, curiously.
Andy still said nothing.
Finally, L turned away and exited the kitchen, stepping onto the couch that backed up against the window, so that he was looking at Andy across the room. The silence stretched on, and after a minute or two of silence, she seemed to reach a decision. She crossed the room and sat on the couch beside L- albeit, as far away as the couch allowed.
"I guess you could say I'm not a girl or a boy," she said after a moment more of thought.
"But how can that be?" L said, turning his head so that he was looking at Andy once again with his owl-like eyes.
"Hell if I know," Andy said, shifting back against the couch and bringing her knees up to her chest, nestling her nose between her knees. "I just do whatever makes me feel comfortable."
"So you bind your chest and cut your hair," L said.
"Sure," Andy said shortly.
"I did wonder about you. No matter how I looked at it, I could not deduce why you seemed flat-chested and without womanly curves, yet you had behavioral and speech habits that often seemed feminine," L mused, brushing his thumb thoughtlessly along his lips. "On top of this, your attire was loose and without the clinginess that would accentuate your body, but had a certain cut that seemed to be very girly."
He was still staring at Andy thoughtfully.
"I try to be androgenous," Andy commented. "I don't really care what pronouns you guys use so I never corrected you." Andy grimaced. "I think it kind of annoyed Galaoi."
"Hmm," L said, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. "Well, this does explain a lot."
"I'm surprised you didn't figure it out," Andy admitted. "You're smart, but not very perceptive."
"I am imperceptive?" L asked, sounding wondering.
Andy shrugged noncommittally, turning away from L's large, dark eyes to tinker with her ring.
