Millicent Thatch sat in her new...well, new to her, kitchen with the corded yellow phone pressed to her right ear. She had moved in a week ago and these phone checkups with her mum had become a daily ritual. The house was very old, and very ugly, but it was the cheapest one on the block and the only one she could afford. Millicent had family back in the US, but moved to London to pursue her acting dream…which was looking farther and farther away. Her new home was located in close proximity to the biggest landfill she had ever laid eyes on, hence the low price and disinterest. She drove by said dump every morning, since she moved, to get to work in the coffee house. Although she had already made this trip 5 times, she failed to notice the large building resting on top of the trash heap. Millie, as her friends and family called her, sorted the slew of mail that covered her kitchen table as she talked with her mum.
"Yes, mum, I'm still fine…no, mum, I'm not broke, and I still have all my limbs. Listen, I have to go finish this organizing, I'll call you later mum. Tell the family hello. Alright…alright…alright, bye."
Millie put the phone on the receiver and went back to sifting through junk mail. The clock told her it was only noon, and her stomach told her it was definitely lunch time. As if to purposely break her from her daydreams about mac&cheese, a crash resounded through the house. Startled, Millie threw all the papers she was holding into the air and proceeded to duck and cover. Curiosity got the better of her and she, slowly, crawled through the kitchen until she could see around into the front room. A brick was lying in the middle of the carpet, surrounded by bits of broken glass.
"What the hell is this?! I've only been here a week and already people want to torture me."
Millie grabbed an empty moving box and tried to sweep the broken glass into it when she noticed a paper tied around the brick. She untied it and held it out.
"Oh, dandy, a threatening note!
'Dear neighbor,
We would like it very much if you would come to our little soirée tonight at 7. Welcome to the neighborhood.
Sincerely,
The chaps who live up the dump'
…You've got to be kidding me."
She looked out of her newly destroyed window and squinted hard. Finally, she could barely make out the silhouette of a large building which was being hidden by many clouds. This was a total sketch-fest looking place.
'Well, it is Saturday, and I don't have work tomorrow…but, look at that place. It's like the house on foul-smelling hill. Hm. I don't have any friends around here yet so I guess I should be sociable. Oh, screw it, I'll go. Wait a second…how did this thing get all the way down here?' (Somewhere in the distance, a small Asian girl with a big slingshot laughs.)
