He was standing so still within the shadows that it seemed he had been created from the inky darkness. Only his eyes held any light in them, twinkling like muted stars from inside the cold gloom. A dull glint of metal flashed every now and again as he shifted. Was it a weapon?
I found myself frozen as I watched him, though not from fear. Rather, my skin tingled from some contagious energy that seemed to fill the very air with electricity. Even the hair on my arms prickled with it. What was this man's purpose as he cloaked himself in the night? What was this fantastic energy that emanated from him? Was it even real, or merely imagined?
I felt drawn to him irresistably. The energy was undeniable; he was dangerous, that was obvious enough, but his life seemed so exciting, so unpredictable. Was it this unpredictability that made him so appealing? The thrill of danger that made his world so inviting? Or perhaps, was it just the mystery that enshrouded him as thickly as the shadows in which he stood that sent my knees to shaking with excitement?
As I stood there, quivering in anticipation of what might happen, he stepped out of the chilled, murky blue shadows adn into the yellow glow radiating from a streetlamp. The light softened his features, brightened the glow in his eyes and almost made him appear angelical.
Almost.
The dull glint at his side could now be recognized as a gun, sharply contrasting the glowing halo that surrounded him. Was he a creature of darkness or light? Or perhaps some of both?
Without warning, he swung his gaze toward my hiding place across the street. His eyes bored into me, sending an icy chill down my spine even as I warmed at the way the light softened his features. Neither of us made any attempt to move, our gazes holding fast as we stood there like two marble statues in a museum. I knew now for certain that he was both devil and angel, a living battle between good and bad. I could sense it radiating from him, and knew that sensation to be what the energy was I had felt before.
When he finally broke the spell and moved down the street back into the darkness, I stood there for innumerable minutes afterward, trying to regain my hold on reality. Never again would I think of the darkness in the same way, nor would I ever again feel so safe in the light. Both elements had a fraction of the other in them, I realized. Just like this man.
