Coffee Break

"That's disgusting, Caitlyn. How can you even drink that?" He asked me after spitting out my heavily-sugared morning coffee.

"Well, it's pretty simple. I open my mouth, tilt my head slightly back, bring the cup up to my mouth, pour the liquid into my mouth, and swallow." He rolled his eyes at my sarcasm.

"Let me revise my question then. How can you drink that without slipping into a sugar coma?" He rebuffed.

"It doesn't have that much sugar!" I exclaimed. "I don't get why you don't drink coffee."

"Tea is proven to be beneficial to your body," he sighed, explaining to me his philosophy for the 2nd time this month. "I don't have to deal with the stupid caffeine surges like you."

"Whatever," I sighed. "If you don't like coffee so much, then why did you ask me to meet you at Starbucks?"

He looked at me for a long time, asking if I had seriously just asked that question. "Yes, Nate, that does require an answer."

"Caitlyn, we've been meeting here, every Monday after school for the last 4 months!"

"Yeah, but you're the one who suggested Starbucks," I rebutted.

"Because it's the only place you know how to drive to!"

"That's not fair!" I yelled. "I know how to get to school, and the music store downtown. And the consignment shop downtown."

He sighed once again. "Why would I want to meet at any of those places?"

"I don't know, Nate. Maybe you're an A student and have this weird obsession with school, or you just might happen to be a member of one the world's largest rock bands, or you only where skinny jeans and vintage ray bans," I said, sarcasm dripping through my words.

"You're point? You're the one who said that you didn't want to deal with all the 'camera guys,'" he quoted me from 4 months ago. "This way, we can just sit and enjoy our…beverages, and you might have a chance at actually passing math."

I sat in silence for a moment, temporarily stumped by his reasoning. "Nate," I said slowly, buying myself some time before I could come up with a new answer. "It's July."

A smile slowly crept across my face as I knew I had one this battle. Our fights were infamous around the school. Every morning we would bicker until our lungs gave out. Usually Nate won, his slow rhetoric beating my impulsive rebuttals.

"And you really want to stop meeting?" He sighed softly, in agreement that the battle was over.

"No," I smiled, climbing out of my chair and softly kissing him. "I really don't."

"Good," he said as he pulled me into his lap. 4 months ago we were enemies, and those fights were real. But somewhere we blurred the lines of friend and foe, realizing that the other wasn't so bad after all. We had been friends for a while before the lines blurred even further, with songs and debates and dances that started to suggest that maybe being friends weren't the point after all.

We stood up, hand in hand, carrying our drinks as we left our meeting spot. Long ago had we ditched our disguises. The Starbucks was out of the way and quiet, and the baristas and regulars had stopped caring that Nate was part of Connect 3 after the first few weeks.

The bright sunshine blinded us before we realized what it really was.

"So much for avoiding those camera guys," Nate sighed, trying to shield me.

"It's ok," I said turning slightly towards him. "Why try and stop what's real?"

I leaned over towards him, and pulled him in for a kiss.

After a while we broke apart, coming up for air. "Maybe coffee isn't so bad after all," Nate whispered into my ear. I smiled, and together we walked off, a couple and their coffee.
