Elves into the west

The elves are riding

Away from their home

Down to the sea,

The waves and the foam

There by the shore

A boat lies in wait

To carry them away,

For such is their fate

A boat of grey

With shining white sail

Smooth, sloping sides,

Embossed with mithrail

Their lands have faded

So they must go west

And so to the havens

The elves go to rest

Hearing gulls cry

Their hearts take a leap

The old sea longing

Is awakened from sleep

The fair folk are leaving

For yonder shore

Their hearts will now rest

In the forest no more

The folk that once dwelt

In woodland realm

Shall no longer find peace

Under beech, oak or elm

They have fought great battles

Said many rhymes

Discovered the earth's secrets

Of long lost times

They learnt from the stars

And talked to the trees

Sang many songs

And have done what they pleased

But now we mortals

Shall see them no longer

Unless we too

Pass that shore yonder
