The Sound of It

"Marry me."

She looked up from her book, staring at him completely baffled.

"W… What did you just ask me?"

"I didn't ask, it was rather a suggestion."

"A…"

"Yeah. But forget it. Just wanted to hear how it sounded."

"And… how did it sound?" She was curious now.

He shrugged. "I guess it depends."

"Depends on what?"

"Well… how you think about it."

"About what?"

"About my suggestion."

"Oh." She was silent for a moment, chewing on her lower lip. She always did that when she was nervous.

He raised an eyebrow. "And?"

"You know, I always thought, if I was ever getting married, then only once. And only to a guy I could imagine spending the rest of my life with. You know, the one and…"

"It's okay. Just forget it."

"If you get married, it should be to a person you really love and you don't think you could ever live without and… that's why I turned down Logan when he first asked and…"

"Rory. I told you: It's okay. Just forget I ever said something." He was pretending not to care, just as if it was nothing, but deep down inside he had to admit that he was hurt. Maybe because he had been pretty convinced that she would say yes, otherwise he would never have asked. And after all, they had been together for almost three years now…

"I mean, we're happy, aren't we? So…"

He didn't say anything. She was right, they were happy the way it was. In fact, he had never been happier. She was the only woman he had ever truly loved and they had a great life together. And he thought they would have a great life in ten years, too. Together. Everything she had just said about "the one" and imagining the rest of their lives together… that was exactly how he felt about her. And there she was, rambling about why she wouldn't marry him. And it hurt. It hurt so much. He wished she'd just shut up and forget about it, about his stupid idea. But instead she just kept going on and on and…

"So when are we going to tell Mum and Luke about it?"

At this question, he snapped out of his thoughts… well, self-pitying, and looked at her, confused.

"Tell them what?"

"That we're going to get married, of course."

"So you're… you're saying yes."

"Why shouldn't I?"

"But… all the stuff you just said about only marrying once and only a guy you want to spend the rest of your life with?"

"What about that?"

"You really meant that?"

"Of course I did." She really didn't understand what he was getting at, now.

"And you're still saying yes?"

She nodded and a big smile started to spread across his face.

"So I guess we're gonna get married."

Now she had to smile, too. "Yes. We're gonna get married."

He laid his hands on her hips and pulled her closer to his body. "So, Mrs. Mariano…"

She giggled. "Wanna hear how it sounds?"

Jess laughed. "Nope. I already knew it would sound great."
