Ok this is a quick one-shot inspired by that scene in series 2 episode 5. Enjoy.
Smutty Comments
"What's 'appened?" Jackie asked from the doorway. Alex put the phone down and turned to face her houseguest.
"Nothing, I was... I was just having a... a dream, about my little girl..." The pregnant journalist made her way to the bedside and sat down next to her. Trying not to let her emotions get the better of her, Alex smiled weakly. Jackie put an arm around her as Alex wiped away a tear.
"Hey shh, come on, I need you to be strong for me." Alex suppressed a sob; God how she missed Molly, she needed her. More tears trailed down her cheeks as she felt the pain and fear building up inside her again.
The sound of the door opening made the women start. They both looked round to see Gene standing there with a bemused expression on his face. Brushing the tears away, the emotion evident in her voice, Alex spoke.
"Go on then, make some smutty comment." But Gene was thrown by the hurt in her eyes; he felt a sudden urge to go to her and hold her tight, to tell her it would all be ok. Jackie, who seemed to be able to read Gene's mind, eased herself up from Alex's side.
"I have to piss. Again." She announced, leaving the two of them alone. Gene moved over to the bed and sat down carefully beside his DI.
"You ok?" He asked quietly. Alex could see the concern in his gaze. She nodded slowly, trying not to start crying. She really didn't want Gene to see her cry. "Alex?" Her lower lip was trembling with the effort of holding back more tears. Alex looked down, holding a hand up to her face, trying not to break down completely. Gene reacted as soon as she did.
"Come 'ere." Alex leaned against him, his arms around her as the tears began to fall. He held her as she cried; cried for her daughter, and for herself.
Jackie Queen smiled to herself from her position in the doorway, her hands cradling her bump as she watched the two of them together. Maybe she'd been wrong about Gene. Maybe he had been put on this earth to do something more than just catch crooks; Alex obviously needed him, but Jackie had a feeling that the mighty Manc Lion needed Alex just as much.
