Sitting alone in the rain was a young woman clad in a black mourning gown.
A long black veil showered over her face like a waterfall, concealing a
grieving princess. In her hand rested a single red rose. Droplets of rain
collected upon its petals.
It had been raining for days now. The land of Hyrule had never seen so much rain since myths from ancient times. Slowly but surely the heavy downpour of rain had subsided, and now all that remained was a light sprinkle. Zelda did not want the rain to end. The rain was a reflection of the pain, and sadness inside her heart.
'It was supposed to be me.' She thought again. 'Why was I spared?'
Arching her neck, she closed her eyes and let the cool breeze caress her face. But as it did she found herself unable to contain the raw emotions that she'd tried to control Hot tears stung her eyes but she paid no attention, spreading her arms wide and turning the palms of her hands upwards so that they faced the sky. The water on her face was soothing. Tracking down her cheeks in place of the tears she knew would never come.
As a princess she'd learned to shield her feelings from others, raise walls that would keep them out and allow her to perform her duty without intrusion. But how sad that those shields still held, even when in private, for she could still not allow herself to let them down.
Zelda chewed on her lip then stared up at the sky. Her anger was already beginning to dissolve and she knew she had no excuse to be out here at this time of day. Staying would only beg questions that she felt no desire to answer. If Impa found her in this state she would only do what she thought was best, and that would be to drag her to the Temple and pray again.
Inwardly, Zelda cried.
Cried for the hero that would always be. and for the boy that she had lost. Her expression still remained the same though; lost, alone, impenetrable.
'He came to the castle to save me' Zelda reflected upon her hero's last moments... the last moments before the rain had started.
She had kneeled next to him, holding his hand and attempting to wipe the blood off his face. His body was covered in burns and blisters so severe; she knew he had little time left. The cobblestones were charred black and debris lay strew across what had once been the lair of the greatest evil Hyrule had ever known.
She fumbled with the rose that lay between her fingertips. Her gown rustled as Zelda stood and made her way toward a marble headstone with the crest of the royal family engraved on to its face. She lowered her head and set the rose on its peak.
A single silky petal of the rose brushed against the bottom of the crest as it fell to ground. Zelda watched it float through the air and land at the foot of her flowing, black gown. Suddenly the light rain that had been steadily falling on her head ceased. She looked up to see the black clouds, which had been covering her kingdom for days, being pushed slowly away.
She turned her back to the headstone and began to walk back toward the castle.
"Godspeed hero," was the last thing she murmured before closing the door to the palace gardens.

Hey! Gimmie a kiss! I finally updated! You missed me and you know it! Tee hee!
I've been really super busy this summer so please understand that. Yes, I realize that this is extremely short and all that junk, but for the record I only wrote this because I was having severe writers block. Hopefully this little piece will pull the plug on that so I can get back to writing...actual fics. We'll see!
