A/N: What might have been had Evil Eye ended a little differently. This is based on the Harry Nilsson song "Without Her" and I have attached the lyrics in the second chapter in case people are unfamiliar with the song. Short one-shot, hope you like :)
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Without Her
He never even got to say goodbye.
It had all happened so fast. A car accident of all things and then she was gone.
He never thought he'd be the one left behind; never thought he'd ever have to face a day without her in his life.
He may never have been the ideal husband, he knew she had had to put up with an awful lot, but he had honestly loved her.
She had understood him like no one else ever had before or since and he wasn't sure how he was going to survive without that understanding. She had been his rock, his anchor and now she was gone.
He wished he had told her how much he needed her, how much he loved her, how much he was going to miss her. He had never taken the time, he now wished to God that he had.
But most of all he wished that he could have seen her just one last time, held her hand as she slipped away. What hurt the most was that after everything she had died alone.
There had been so many times that he hadn't been there for her while she had lived and in that fateful moment he had failed her again.
He sat, unmoving, in his chair trying not to think about her. Hoping this was all somehow a bad dream that he would soon wake up from, that she would come into the room and chide him for being so silly.
He blinked back tears.
He just wanted her back. More than anything, he just wanted her back in his life, safe and sound.
Suddenly the knowledge that she was gone seemed too great to bear and, for the first and last time in his life, Jim Taggart wept.
