Before Bree learned about magic, Bree met Wally.

Ten year old Bree Louise Smith was on her hands and knees, trying to grab a lizard that was hiding under the steps on the family's ancestral home. Bree had learned how to entertain herself at family reunions since the only other children were either teenagers or babies and the adults were only interested in talking. She didn't pay attention to the group of adults talking nearby until her parents called her over.

They'd been talking to her cousin Barry and his wife Iris. When Bree got closer she noticed a boy she'd never seen before hiding behind Iris's legs. Iris took a step to the side and put a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"Bree, this is my nephew Wally." Iris introduced.

"Hi Wally." Bree greeted brightly.

"Hi." Wally replied softly.

"Do you want to play with me?" Bree asked. Wally looked up certainly at Iris and Barry.

"Go ahead, kid, have some fun." Barry encouraged.

Wally was still a bit hesitant, but he let Bree lead him to her favorite part of the property, a wooded area with a creek winding through it.

Bree had Wally help her search for and catch critters. Then she would tell him everything she knew about what they caught before letting it go. She noticed that Wally would flinch if she got excited and started talking loudly or if she moved suddenly. So she tried to move a little slowly and talk a little softer. It went okay until she found something that worried her.

"Oh no!" she exclaimed, which caused Wally to jump and face her.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"There's a fledgling on the ground." Bree explained, pointing out the little bird sitting at the base of a tree.

"Is it hurt?" Wally questioned as Bree knelt down next to the bird.

"No, I don't think so, buts it bad for it to stay on the ground, the barn cats like to come through here." she replied.

She looked up at the tree near the bird. "I think I see it's nest!" She scooped up the bird and held it close to her side with one hand.

Wally looked worried. "You're not going to climb all the way up there, are you?"

"I need to make sure the cats won't get it." Bree told him.

"Yeah but..." Wally protested weakly as she began climbing the tree. He watched as she carefully made her way up the the branch with the nest and put the fledgling back with it's siblings.

"Okay! Come back down now!" Wally shouted.

"I am!" Bree exclaimed. Going down was harder then going up, even with the bird. She had to look down to see the branches and it seemed a lot higher then it had been at the bottom of the tree. Bree went slowly and was confident she could make it down safely, until a weak branch snapped off in her hand. She lost her balance and fell backwards, hitting the ground with a loud thud.

Wally rushed over to her. "Are you okay? Did I need get someone?"

Bree sat up. "I'm fine."

"But-but you fell." Wally said as Bree stood up and dusted off her clothes.

"Nothing hurts." she replied. "Want to go have a snack? I'm getting hungry."

The incident was soon forgotten after a quick snack and a game of tag they managed to get Barry to participate in.

By the end of the reunion, Wally wasn't quite as shy as he had been, though he did blush when Bree hugged him.

"See you next year." she said.

Wally nodded. "Y-yeah. See ya."

It's a good thing Bree had accidental magic in her childhood. She was kind of reckless.
