Immortal Memory

A high pitched scream rang through the night, many women in the town winced as they knew the pain the woman was going through. Ambry had been in labor with her first child for nearly forty-eight hours now, although only ten of that had consisted of physically trying to help the child from her body. Her husband, Iason, stood next to the bed wetting a cloth to wipe the sweat from her face. Iason's shoulder length brown hair was pulled back into a hastily done ponytail, just to keep it out of his eyes. He had also pulled his wife's long black hair back but it had long been soaked with her sweat.

"Rest now child," the midwife told her. "Just a few more pushes and we will have this child into the world."

Ambry collapsed back against the pillows, her chest heaving as she stared at her huge stomach and then looked at her husband. Her eyes were so tired it pained him to see her this way. He wetted the cloth again and wiped her face.

"Soon love, soon we will be holding our son or daughter and all this pain will be forgotten," he told her soothingly. She managed to give him a small smile before she struggled to push herself up again. Another contraction was ripping through her insides and she fought against screaming.

"That's it child, push, push child push. I can see the head," the midwife told Ambry. Iason winced as Ambry squeezed his hand, his fingers felt close to breaking.

Fifteen minutes later the midwife held the babe up and gave him a firm smack on his backside causing him to cry. She finished all the technical parts of her job and cleaned the crying baby, wrapped him in a soft and warm blanket and then handed him to the anxious, yet tired parents.

Wide dark eyes stared up at the two faces that were smiling down at him. The little nose scrunched up as the baby started to cry. Both parents chuckled and cooed at their child before Ambry started to nurse him. Iason took the baby from Ambry when she finished so she could get some rest.

"Wait Iason…" Ambry yawned. "He needs a name." Iason turned and looked down at the baby then at her.

"Very true my love. What do you want to name him?" He asked coming to sit on the edge of the bed. Ambry stared at their baby for a few minutes.

"Ambrose," she answered. Iason looked down at his son, who was now sleeping.

"Ambrose…" He said softly.

"His name will be Ambrose. He will be immortal to those he cares about memories," Ambry explained. Iason smiled.

"Ambrose," he repeated for a second time. "I love it. Ambrose he shall be."
