Prologue
Andy sighed and threw the envelope in the box that was filled with others like it. Just another letter sent back unopened. Just another sign that he no longer cared.
She sat down on her bed and hid her face in her hands, shoulders shaking. There was the small creak of her bedroom door, the soft pad of feet, then someone wrapped their arms around her trembling body and rested their cheek on the top of her head.
Andy crumbled into her twin brother's embrace and sobbed into his neck.
"I t-tried to a-apologize but he k-keeps sending them back unopened!" She wailed. "He d-doesn't even r-read them!"
"Shh…" Ponyboy hushed her and rubbed her back gently. "Just stop sending them. There's no point anymore, right?"
"I love him." Andy protested stubbornly. "That should be enough, shouldn't it?"
"People fall out of love." Pony murmured as gently as possible.
"He promised he wouldn't!" Andy cried in return. "He said he loved me and he always would!"
Ponyboy was silent as he let the sobs wrack through his sister's body and soak his shirt. It wasn't fair to Andy that she had to love somebody who didn't know what love was. It wasn't fair that she could never have the one thing she truly wanted.
Ponyboy had never liked Dallas Winston, but at the moment, he truly hated him.
