Enlightened: Before the Breakdown

Amy Jellicoe sat at her desk that Monday morning as she started work at 9am. She wrung her hands anxiously as she waited for an email from her boss Damon.

But it wasn't a work related email- oh no. Work emails she could handle. This email would be another message from Damon, asking her to meet him somewhere tonight for a quickie.

Amy sighed and adjusted her blue cardigan that she was wearing over her formal black dress and looked around her office in an attempt to try and calm herself down.

Ever since she received the first 'will you go out with me' email from Damon last year she'd been extremely anxious and tense, and she'd often find herself having a panic attack when she was about to go home from work. Thankfully though, her assistant and friend Krista Jacobs was always there to calm her down and check on her to see if she was okay before going home.

It was one year ago today since Damon and Amy went out for dinner together, and now Damon wanted to celebrate that and told her so last Friday before he left from work to go home.

With another sigh, Amy looked at her office poster of a leaf and focused on it to try and calm herself down. She breathed slowly and closed her eyes, eventually feeling calmer. Then there was a knock on her door, jolting her out of her relaxed mode. She opened her eyes and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw it was only Krista.

"Hey Amy," Krista said in her usual bright sing song voice. Amy saw she was wearing a pink blouse with black trousers and a black blazer. She was carrying her usual large folder in one hand and she looked a little flushed, as though she had been running.

"Oh, hey Krista," Amy said happily. "Sorry if I was interrupting anything, but I was a little late today as my car broke down and Steve had to come out and fix it, but it's okay now so I'm sorry I'm running a bit late today," she apologised as she stood in the doorway.

"That's okay, you're not too late," Amy said, just pleased to see her friend. "So how are you?" Krista asked with a friendly smile.

Amy smiled back. "I'm good thanks Krista," she told her. Krista nodded. "Well, I'm going to go get set up and logged on," she said, before beginning to close the door.

Just before she closed the door Amy blurted out, "Hey Krista are we still on for lunch today? I wanna talk to you about something," Amy said. Krista stopped and turned round. "Yeah, were still on. Do you wanna talk about something important?" she asked. Amy shrugged. "I guess. Thanks for talking Krista, I'll see you at lunch," Amy said. Krista nodded before turning round and going back to her desk.

Once Krista closed the door Amy leaned forward and rested her head in her hands. She had been trying to tell Krista about her affair with Damon with the best part of the last two months but every time she tried to bring it up she'd chicken out. This time will be different, she decided. After all, Krista was her friend, and friends confided in each other right? So she decided to tell her today.
