A slow, black, grin began to form across Don John's sour lips as he began
to think about how damned he was. As he was shackled to the dungeon wall,
he began to think about the irony of the whole situation. Not only was he
going to go to hell for loving a man, but that self-same man had aided in
his down fall. Normally, that would truly bring out the bitterness in
oneself.
Don John loved it.
It was almost as if he was playing a game of chess with his own fate, and his fate had just called out "checkmate." He could not win against his own fate no matter how hard he tried.
Dogberry finished shackling him to the wall. "Mark this, your lovely companion, Conrade declared me an ass."
"Not an arduous task, I'm sure." Don John replied. Dogberry left, gallivanting on his imaginary horse.
Don John was left with the other prisoners. It was Conrade who spoke first.
"Master, I apologize for my actions." Conrade repented. "I had to confess."
Don John looked him over. He began to laugh, a twisted laugh that would put children into hysterics.
"What ails you, man?" Borachio asked.
"Oh, we are villains. We're going to hell anyway. You and I especially, Conrade." Don John looked upon Conrade.
"What does he speak of, Conrade?" Borachio asked.
Conrade hesitated for a long time before finally coming out with the truth. "We've confessed our eternal love for each other, and have signed our souls over to the devil in our own blood."
"You mean..." Borachio could say it.
"Conrade was in my bedchamber last night."
Borachio turned very pale, and very quiet.
"And, today, he aids in my capture. Bravo, Conrade." Don John laughed.
"Have you gone completely mad?? We'll hang for our sins!" Conrade pleaded.
"No one ever said love was a simple task." Don John smirked.
Thusly, the game of chess continued its heated match. _
