A Medicine Cat's Mistake

Chapter 1

Autumnpaw woke up in a dark, shadowy place, with old burnt tree's surrounding her. She soon realised she was sent into this dream by star clan. Suddenly yellow eyes gleamed in the darkness.

"Greeting, Autumnpaw." Echoed an unfamiliar voice.

"G-greetings…"Replied Autumnpaw hesitantly. She wondered where star clan had sent her this time. Was it actually star clan sending her here…or other ancestors…

"Who are you?" she asked her eyes full of curiosity.

"That's not important, young one." The mysterious voice echoed. "I have come with a message." It started.

"Be careful of your actions. A mistake could be deadly to your clan!"

"What! What mistake? What will happen to my clan!" She wailed her eyes big with shock. But the eyes were fading.

"Hear me Autumnpaw! Be careful of your actions!" The voice howled. Suddenly many more howling flooded into Autumn paws ears and she realised she was surrounded by wolves! Her eyes shot open and she found herself back in the medicine cats den. Her mentor Sun-stripe, was just waking up.

"D you sleep well?" Her mentor asked.

"Yes…"she replied, her voice sounded as if she were concentrating on something else.

"Are you ok?…" She mewed her voice filled with concern.

"yes, fine" Autumnpaw replied hoping her voice sounded reassuring.

"Ok…"Sun-stripe looked un-easy. "You can tell me anything you know." She assured her.

"I know!" She mewed. A pang of guilt struck her, she felt terribly sad for lying to her mentor. Sun-stripe nodded.

"Its leaf bare now. Kits will be getting green cough." Sun-stripe sighed. Autumn paw murmured in agreement. Suddenly a kit came into the den, crying.

"Sun-stripe!" she called

"yes?" sighed Sunstripe.

"I got a thorn in my pad!" She wailed "I can't get it out!" She squeaked.

"All right, all right, keep your fur on!" She mewed. Her voice growing a bit irritated. The medicine cat searched her paw. "Ok. I'm going to need you to give me your pad" She ordered after observing her paw. She bent her head down on the paw and gripped onto the thorn with her teeth. Then she pulled it out in one go. The kit wailed as blood welled from her pad.

"It's bleeding!"

"Its all right." Mewed the wise medicine cat meowed. "Give it a few good licks and it'll stop bleeding soon"

"ok" the little kit replied. "thanks sun-stripe!"

"its my duty…" She mewed smiling.

The words rang in Autumn paw's head. Be careful of your actions. A mistake can be deadly for your clan!

What did the strange wolf mean? Was her clan doomed to death! She thought about the message and barely heard any of sun-stripes words.

"Did you see that? That is what you do when some cat comes to you with a thorn in their pad, I tell you, I've lost count of how many thorns I've had to deal with…"

Autumn paw looked up confused.

"Err…Sorry, I wasn't listening…" She admitted. Her mentor suppressed a sigh.

"what's been going on with you? Ever since you woke up this morning you've been distracted" She told her.

"I'm sorry. I'll be more concentrated for the whole day. I promise!" She mewed assuringly. Sun-stripe smiled.

"Ok. I need you to get some chervil, we've run out." She was about to add to get some mouse bile but her apprentice was already rushing out of the den. She's coming along fine… She thought to herself.
