Glowing Amber Eyes
Chapter One: In The Shadows
It was nearing lunchtime and Yahiko was nowhere in the dojo. Kenshin said he thought that he was inside eating, but he was not sure. "Yahiko! Yahiko!" Kaoru's voice rang throughout the Kamiya Dojo. "Ugh. I bet he left to go eat." Kaoru scowled. He wasn't done with his training for the day, and she didn't intend on letting him off easy.
By the time Kaoru made her way to the house, after a quick stop to talk to Kenshin,
Yahiko had finished lunch and was lazily staring up at the sky. "Yahiko! There you are." Kaoru said. Her only reply was " What do you want ugly?" Her eye twitched. She really hated it when he called her that, and she always got her revenge. "You are not done with your training Yahiko. You still owe me 100 swings, but since you made that ugly comment you now owe me 200. So get started if you plan on getting to the Akabeko in time for you shift." "WHAT? 200! Ugly women are so cruel!" Yahiko screeched as he scampered to his feet, tripping on the way then regaining his balance. By this time Kaoru was not in the greatest of moods," Yes 200! Now get started before I change my mind and make it 300." Kaoru said while shoving his bokken into his hands, but Yahiko didn't want to go down without a fight. "You know Tea will get mad if I am late, and it would be all your fault…." Yahiko started before Kaoru quickly cut him off with her own yelling.
Kenshin smiled to himself as he listened to Kaoru and Yahiko bicker with each other. As usual he was doing his daily chore. Laundry. "My it is lively today. I hope Ms. Kaoru goes easy on Yahiko." Kenshin thought. He looked up when he heard Yahiko yell in pain, and saw Kaoru dragging Yahiko into the dojo. "What's with all the fuss?" asked Sanosuke as he walked up to Kenshin. Kenshin stood up and replied with the famous rurouni smile and said that Kaoru wasn't letting Yahiko off the hook this morning. Sano just laughed and said "I hope the little miss doesn't go to hard on the kid." Just as Kenshin started to open his mouth to say something he stopped and looked behind himself with eyes narrowed. "What's wrong?" Sano asked starting to become serious. Kenshin scanned the area and waited a moment before answering, " Nothing. This one just thought he felt a chilling presence. It was probably the wind, that is was." Sano wasn't entirely reassured, but let this one go. " Come on Kenshin it's starting to get cold. How about we head on inside, and see what the missy has come up with this time. Hopefully nothing. Then we can go to the Akabeko, and bug Yahiko." Sanosuke snickered, turned around, and walked off in the direction of the house. Kenshin stayed behind slightly and scanned the surroundings one last time. "There is nothing there…It's best not to think about it. It will only make the others worry, that it will." He thought as he too turned around and walked off after Sano. But what Kenshin didn't know was that there was a man standing in the shadows watching every move Kenshin made.
