Title: Don't Look Back

Author: C.E. Warren

A/N: This is based on a real-life thing I wish would happen. The girl named Rose in this story is an older version of me... I wish. ~_~; Let the story... begin.

~Part One~

The Meeting

Just a vacation. It'd been Dumbledore's idea. And after Remus thought about it, "getting away from it all" had been a good idea.

Hugging his jacket around him, though, Remus didn't find that the muggle community of San Francisco, California was quite what he had in mind. The light drizzle of rain dampened his hair and shoulders as his shoes splashed in puddles. The forecast in this place that was known for fun in the sun lately had been rain, rain, rain. That was fine, though; rain suited Remus better at the moment...

"SIRIUS! SIRIUS!" The raven-haired boy ran towards the arch desperately, not daring to believe that his godfather was gone.

Catching the boy around the chest, Remus held Harry back. "There's nothing we can do, Harry-"

"Get him, save him, he's only just gone through!"

The young man struggled hard, and it was almost too much for Remus to keep holding on. "It's too late, Harry-"

"We can still reach him-" Harry argued, struggling harder.

"There's nothing you can do, Harry. Nothing... He's gone."

***

Remus shuddered at the memory. No. He wouldn't think about that again. But even as he resolved to cast it from his mind, the memory resurfaced stubbornly.

***

"SIRIUS! SIRIUS!"

Remus struggled to control the fifteen-year-old, holding him back. As he spoke, the only sign of his anguish was the sound of his voice breaking in mid-sentence. "He can't come back, Harry. He can't come back because he's d-"

"HE - IS - NOT - DEAD!"

***

Remus wished that were true. He wished it so much. He'd been just like Harry when Lily and James had died, trying to convince himself that they weren't dead, as if believing would make it true. But Remus had learned, all too well, that believing in something didn't solve all your problems or turn back time.

Walking slightly faster, Remus cast his eyes to the ground. Remembering didn't bring Lily and James back. Neither would it for Sirius.

Turning the corner and apologizing after nearly colliding with a muggle boy, Remus walked on. Up ahead, he saw the variety store he was headed to. When he reached it, he held open the door for a young woman with a paper bag in her arms. She thanked him, but did a double take and stopped, looking at him strangely. It took Remus a moment to realize why.

Witches, and wizards were not the only people who knew about the magical world. There was a book series that had been released all about Harry Potter, and Remus had a feeling that this woman had read them.

"D-do I know you?" she asked, she gazed at him as though trying to see through him, her gray-blue eyes locked on him.

"I don't think so," he answered truthfully.

Watching him as if he'd vanish any second, she frowned a bit. "What's you name?" she asked.

"Remus," he answered automatically. Her bag slipped from her arms and they both knelt to pick up its content from the ground. Standing back up, he finished in hopes of covering up his mistake. "Remus LeCloud."

"Oh, how rude of me..." the young woman said, seeming to have regained her composure. She still gazed at him, though, as if she were trying to decide something about him. "My name is Rose Farrel." They shook hands, Rose watching him all the while.

"Well, ah, have a nice day, Miss Farrel." Remus nodded to her, turning to enter the store.

"Wait!" Rose said. "You have to model for me."
