Summary: Christine is dead. Or is she? The angels have devised a plan that involves both Erik and Raoul to bring her back.

IN DREAMS

Christine dreamt that she had died. In heaven, a council of angels convened to explore the nature of her premature death. It was deemed to have been a mistake. They pondered how to right that error and decided that in order to correct their blunder and bring her back to life a great sacrifice would have to be made by one of the mortal men who loved her. Each man believed himself to be the only one who could bring life to his beloved again.

Erik and Raoul both grieved for their beloved Christine and were inconsolable. Raoul had no desire for the constant social events he had to attend and neglected his duties as a vicomte. For Erik, his music barely brought solace to his pain and sorrow. The notes he played sounded hollow to him. Angels appeared to them and in turn, each of the two men in her life was informed of the heavenly plan. They rejoiced in the fact that they had an opportunity to bring her back. Then, each man was asked for the maximum sacrifice he would make in order to bring Christine back to life. They were warned that if the sacrifice was not deemed grand enough she would not only not return but be damned to Hell forever. They were both given one day during which they had to come up with the required sacrifice.

Raoul went first and swallowing hard said he would give up his title. He took his crest from the carriage and shattered it in front of the council of angels. In one second, the carriage disappeared and he became Monsieur Raoul Chagny. Erik was next; he got up from his organ, and adjusted his mask. Quietly he put both his hands on a guillotine and smiled.

Christine woke as the blade slid down on Erik's hands. She trembled, surprised to see that she was alive and well. Her body felt cold and damp with perspiration. A sigh of relief escaped her lips. She dressed and readied herself to go out. As she brushed her lustrous chestnut curls she recalled her dream. Christine went over every detail of her dream and thought that today would be a good day to make a choice! On her way to the man she loved she imagined in sweet anticipation the surprised look on his face when he saw her and almost tasted the kisses he would bestow on her lips.
