Author's Note: I think that the end of Law and Order (the original) is coming maybe not this season, but within the next couple years. It's been bugging me as to how the series finale will be, and let me tell you now, if they screw it up, I'm going to be upset. The idea of how it's going to end has been bouncing around in my head for a while and this is what I came up with, although it's part of a longer fic, it works here by itself. Okay, enough. On with the story.

The End

"What are you still doing here?" Anita Van Buren said to the man in the leather chair.

"I could ask you the same exact same thing, Lieutenant." Jack McCoy said standing as she came into his office. He walked around the desk and stood in front of her. "I'm sorry, I forget, it's Captain now isn't it?"

She smiled. "Officially, it starts at midnight tonight. But for you, Mister Elected District Attorney, I will let you start now."

Jack laughed. "Why is it that we just can't come out and say 'Congratulations'?"

"Two things: One, because we are us, and I think that says enough." She grinned.

Jack grinned back. "And two?"

"Two: We're too old for this and we both know it, but we both wouldn't have it any other way."

"Couldn't have said it better myself."

"Now you're just sucking up to me."

He chuckled. "Maybe I am." A quiet silence fell over them.

"Counselor?"

"Hmm?"

"You didn't answer my original question."

He laughed. "I should point out that you didn't either, but I don't feel like being accused of being a lawyer this late at night."

Anita giggled.

"I'm waiting for my daughter. She's coming to pick me up. Doesn't think her old man should be walking the streets at night.."

"She has a point."

"I can take care of myself."

"Yes you can, but why be where danger can find you?"

He grinned. "Now you sound like her. What are you doing here?"

"Came by to drop off some reports to your boy."

"Don't you have people to do that for you?"

"Yes, but I thought I'd come by and see how you were doing from the election."

"Doing fine, as you can see." A comfortable silence fell over the pair once again.

"You know," Jack started quietly. "Lennie would be proud of you. He always thought the Department was wrong for not promoting you."

Anita smiled. "And Claire would be proud of you. No doubt about it."

"They're probably laughing at us right now for all the times that we said 'I'll die before that happens.'" Jack laughed and Anita chuckled.

"True, true." The ringing of her cell phone cut the laughter short. In less than a minute, she was off it again.

"Trouble?"

"Of course. Body of a witness was found. I got to go."

"No problem Captain," he grinned. "Thanks for stopping by."

She stopped when she was at the door and turned around. "I'm surprised you're not in a fouler mood. It's a body of a witness, it'll probably through this office."

"Along with countless others, unfortunately, all seeking the same thing, which I will give them."

"Which is?"

"Justice."

"Criminals are getting smarter, Jack."

"It doesn't matter. I will see that justice is served."

"They think they'll be able to get away with it."

"Well, when you arrest them, tell those "smarter criminals" that the District Attorney said one thing."

"Which is?"

"Bring it on."
