Prologue
''We will be arriving at Impel Down in another hour.''
Tsuru eyed the woman casually leaning back in the no doubt uncomfortable wooden chair, looking strangely at ease with the situation. Honey colored hair waved back in a careless bun, ocean colored eyes calm and composed.
Still a delicate beauty even with the wrinkles slowly encroaching upon the skin, and the faint burn mark stretching across her right cheek to the edge of her eye.
But perhaps, it wasn't such a surprise. In the fifteen years she had known this woman, Eliana had never looked as if she wasn't in control of the situation. Tsuru had always admired this. There weren't that many women like this around. Confidence in their eyes, looking disdainfully down on all that thought them lesser.
They had formed an odd friendship around their similarities, even when Eliana was nearly half her age. No one who saw this woman would think that she was the owner of the world's largest shipping conglomerate and just what she had used this fortune for.
''I know. Thank you, Tsuru. You didn't have to accompany me – us.''
The softly spoken words were followed by the clattering of chains and Tsuru sighed softly. The Great Staff Officer of Navy Headquarters let her eyes wander to the corner of the room. While the woman sitting at the table wore only thin metal cuffs, the shape lying motionlessly in the corner was literally wrapped in thick, heavy chains.
Tsuru couldn't blame the marines for their caution. The strength of this man couldn't be underestimated. They had made that mistake once – five days ago. Their causalities were tremendous.
''Just what-'' Tsuru began, before uncharacteristically falling silent.
A small smile tilted the woman's lips upward, her eyes brightening and Tsuru felt something resembling grief for this bright woman who would be thrown into the worst prison in this world, torn apart for supporting a cause that sometimes in the deepest darkest recesses of her mind – Tsuru thought long overdue.
''There is no need to feel guilty. Sometimes Fate is just like this – unpredictable. Toying with human's lives in the worst way possible.''
A small grin. Bright and somehow all the worse for it.
''I have no regrets.''
Tsuru slumped onto the chair opposite to her prisoner, more tired than she had ever felt before.
''I don't understand. From when on…?''
Eliana laughed softly, thinking back to the decades that had passed since she was born into this world.
Those terrible and beautiful years.
''Ne, Tsuru. Do you want to hear a story? I can tell you… how it all began.''
A/N Wow... I'm backish? Well not really. I'm super busy right now, that's why this is in such a format. I think I can churn out some drabbles now and then... So enjoy!
