" And, stop the time," said the referee as I passed him and came to an abrupt stop. " Congratulations, " said the taller of the two referees, " your time is five minutes and forty-two seconds, I think you set a new High School Record! "
" Hmph, " I muttered while I was walking away. How pathetic, I thought to myself. I walked of the school track and into a small outdoor room on the outside of the last lane. Inside, most of the members of my school's track team were sitting down either wiping their sweat-covered faces or waiting anxiously for their turn to display their result of two long weeks of training. I grabbed my bag and towel and was about leave when I heard someone call me.
" Mayumi, wait Mayumi! " I turned around to see a girl around my age who was wearing a white and green school uniform that she wore practically every day.
" Kagome, " I said with very little emotion what so ever.
" Great job today, that was the fastest I have ever seen someone run two miles. It is a great thing that you joined our track team this year. With you, we might even win the district tournament for once. Wow, you must be in awesome shape, look at you. You are super skinny and aren't even sweating. What do you eat for breakfast? "
Wow, she does talk a lot, I thought. "What are you doing here?" I asked.
" Oh, well a couple of my friend thought that maybe it would be a good idea for me to go on a date with Hojo and since he is also on the track team, I thought that it would be a good idea to watch him. Hey, do you want to come over to my house now? We can maybe get something to eat. Are you hungry? "
" I guess I can come over, I don't think I have anything else today. But, I am not hungry. " Kagome looked shocked when she found out that I wasn't hungry but soon shrugged it off.
" Yay, I can show you this new outfit that I just bought yesterday. It is such a bummer that we uniforms, I could totally get the guys with this outfit." Kagome continued on talking but I stopped hearing her voice. Instead, I heard a humming noise that slowly became louder as we walked into the direction of Kagome's House that was just up ahead.
Kagome continued to talk thinking that I was just ignoring her, as usual. To make her think that I was still listening, I would occasionally nod my head in approval to whatever she was saying.
Kagome's House was much like an ancient Japanese shrine. It had a large main section where Kagome's family lived. A large barren tree stood tall in the middle of the property. Kagome's House also had several small other huts one of which was right next to the main house. This hut was where the humming noise had originated.
Kagome ran to the large part of the house and ran inside searching for the outfit that she was bragging about. The urge to find out what the humming noise was became larger until I couldn't handle it anymore. I quickly made my way to the mysterious hut. The door opened revealing a staircase that lead down to an old well that once had a seal on it. I made my way down to the well and balanced myself on one of the wooden walls hoping that I could catch a glance of whatever was inside of this well.
I couldn't see anything so I leaned over a bit more when the portion of wood that I was standing on broke off. I plummeted to the bottom of the well positioning my arms to receive the brutal impact that would never come. I was surrounded by a bright pinkish light and seemed to be suspended in mid-air. I closed my eyes in fright until I felt myself roll on the dirt floor of another well.
