Kitchen
"Mama?"
"Yeah, buddy?" DG asked, looking across the counter at her nine-year-old son.
"Why does Daddy call you Astrid?" DG smiled and pointed to the string beans still on his plate with her fork.
"It's kind of a code," she said with a nod, poking at one of the beans and munching on it. "It's his way of saying 'I love you.'" She smiled as the boy's face scrunched up. He was just getting to that age and it killed her.
"That's why you call him Del?" DG smiled and nodded.
"And it's why I call you Buddy," she winked.
Warrior
"So, if I say: 'Hey, Del' to Daddy, he would know what I meant?" Teddy asked as he and DG moved down the hallway toward his room. DG stopped, kneeled down and pulled him toward her.
"Definitely," she said with a single nod. "And," she started a moment later with a grin. "It gets you around the Man Law." Teddy face scrunched again, this time in confusion.
"What's the Man Law?"
"Well, apparently," she started dramatically. "There's a law that says when a boy gets to be your age, he isn't allowed to say 'I love you' anymore."
"Really?"
"Yup."
Cheer
"When Wyatt says that I'm a pest-" Teddy asked with wide-eyes. DG gave him a half smile.
"She's being a mean big sister." Teddy frowned. He didn't want his sister loving him, anyway. DG noticed Jeb enter the hallway out of the corner of her eye. Turning to Teddy, she smiled. "You wanna give it a try?" She nodded slightly toward Jeb and Teddy nodded.
DG turned him toward Jeb and he called out: "Hey, Del!" Jeb looked up from the pages in his hand and saw DG mime 'I love you,' while pointing to Teddy.
Jeb smiled and laughed.
