Death

Colonel Mustang was pacing the small room. The next day they would execute the coup d'etat and his head was filled with tactics, plans and questions.

His eyes turned fearful. He turned to his lieutenant anxiously, "Hawkeye. What if… What if I die?"

Hawkeye put down the gun she was cleaning and turned round to face her commanding officer. Her eyes were reassuring and calm. "If that happens, I'll die too and we'll go to heaven."

The naïve idea was just what he needed to calm down. His worrisome face turned into the self satisfied smirk of a cat with a mouse in a corner and its claws out. "Heaven doesn't exist, lieutenant" He chided. "It may." She responded.

His face returned to its previous state of uncertainty. "But if heaven exists so does… And if that exists I would go to… Lieutenant. What if I go to hell?"

Hawkeye stood up and looked into his eyes. "Well sir." Her voice was confident and comforting, like a beam of sunlight, "Then I'd follow you and watch your back and protect you from all the demons of hell."

He nodded and murmured his thanks. One last question remained in his mind but he couldn't voice it, in case he jinxed it. For it to happen would be worse then death, hell and all the others terrors fate had in mind for him. What if she died and he had to live without her?
