A Treasure Planet Oneshot by Luna Silvereyes.
Sarah held Jim at the window as they gazed out at the sky of the planet Montressor. Jim, though only a few years old, still held memories of all they had left behind. Sarah understood this, for she had left much behind on Earth as well. The planet had been dying, and several ships carrying special passengers had been dispatched to all corners of the universe, Sarah, Jim and Jim's father included. Each craft had only been capable of carrying up to five passengers. Sarah was saddened that her parents had refused to come, saying they wished that she live a full life without the responsibility of aging parents.
Jim was saddened by the loss of the home he barely knew. He had been born on Earth. Montressor was a new, scary place with beings none of them had ever seen before. But then, Jim and his family were unlike anything the beings on Montressor had ever seen before either.
Jim stared out the window at the perpetual crescent in the sky that he had recently learned from their new friend, Dr. Doubla, was the Montressor spaceport. Unlike the moon from Earth, this one never changed. A full moon, when Jim brought it up in class one day, had made everyone laugh at him, saying there was no such thing as a full moon and not believing Jim when he told them of Earth's moon. Their comments had hurt him deeply, affecting his mother as well. Jim turned to his mother, sitting beside him at the window. She was as sad as he was. Their new tavern and inn, The Benbow wasn't doing very well, though they'd been open almost a year now. Travelers refused to come in, calling Jim, Sarah and Jim's father, freaks. A few would stop in for drinks and one night's stay, but then they'd pay and leave as hastily as possible.
" Mom." Jim said. " Why don't the people here like us?"
Sarah sighed and hugged her son. " Jim, it's difficult to explain to you right now. I suppose," she bit her tongue, searching for the right words. He was so young, he probably wouldn't understand right now. " I suppose it's because, we're different. We're strange to them. Remember, we come from a world that was so far from Montressor, it hadn't even been heard of until we arrived. They don't really know what to make of us."
" But we're the same on the inside, like you used to say a long time ago." Jim said brightly. Sarah felt near to tears at what she had to say now. " Jim, here, we're different, even on the inside." She whispered. Jim's face fell. " Oh." He murmured. He sighed and turned to the window. " I wanna go home." He mumbled. Sarah pulled him close. " I do too, honey. But we can't. We don't…we don't have a home to go to anymore."
She gazed out the window at the star ships passing outside the docking bays. She watched the flickering of billions of stars and planets outside the thin atmosphere. She kissed the top of her son's head and sighed.
" Mom." Jim said. Sarah looked at him. " Yes, Honey?"
" Are we going to be okay?"
Sarah smiled. " Yes, Jim. We're going to be okay."
She hummed a couple notes and smiled. " Life is hard, son. But we keep finding reasons to keep on living. That's what it's all about."
Jim smiled and snuggled closer, gradually falling asleep in his mother's arms. Sarah watched him for a moment and looked out at the inky black universe once more.
