It describes "a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that they both desire but which neither one wants to start."
All those nights after the long cases they worked together. They enjoy sharing the simple things, such as a glass of scotch to wind down. But in between those moments when they talk, silence is shared, however un-awkward the silence, both still feel tense. Not awkward, just tense. And they share something known as Mamihlapinatapai.
Although the word may look weird, and probably sounds weird (as I have no idea how to pronounce it) I feel it accurately sums up Cal and Gillian's feelings during those moments. Those moments of intensity. Where, as described above, both share a look and both wish that the other will start something that they both desire but which neither one wants to initiate. This, I feel, is the problem in Cal and Gillian's relationship. They are both terrified to start something; to follow through with their feelings for one another.
