The Monster
(disclaimer: I own nothing from The Lost World. All of my stories are written to help keep interest in The Lost World alive and because I love these characters.)
The Monster slowly opened its eyes. This was not a good morning as it looked around its cave. It had not slept well the previous night as it had enjoyed too much of the fermented juice. The jungle creatures were too loud this morning and the sun was too bright. Slowly the Monster slid from its bed and slipped to the floor. Wait, why was the floor so close this morning? Moving slowly so not to aggravate the pounding between its ears it found its coverings that had been tossed aside last night. It stood uncertainly not caring that its hair was unkempt. The Monster didn't care as it had only one need this morning which would be fulfilled momentarily.
The Monster sniffed the air and smelled what it sought. It stumbled out of its lair and toward the source of the smell. It passed the startled looks of others of its kind as it growled at them. Nothing would deter the Monster from finding its needed sustenance. Finally the Monster reached the source of the smell and reached for it with its paw.
It heard a growl of disapproval from close behind it and turned to growl in return. The newcomer stepped back, startled by its rival's vehemence. Normally the Monster wasn't so fierce but this morning it wasn't backing down. Finally the Monster had its goal within its paws and licked the inside of its mouth, sniffing appreciatively. A smile appeared on its jowls as it finally tasted its nectar.
The Monster took its time with its prize, savoring each sniff, each taste, each tiny drop as it slowly sipped the nectar. There was another complaint from its rival but the Monster ignored it as it took more of the nectar. At last the Monster felt satisfied as it turned toward its competitor.
At last the Monster began its transformation this morning. It finally grinned at the other.
"Ned Malone, don't you ever come between me and the first cup of coffee again," Marguerite glared at the now grinning journalist.
(Just a little vignette I hope will give you a smile.)
