My eyes fluttered open, slowly taking in the look of the room as the first few rays of sunlight passed through the window and gently illuminated everything it touched with a soft early morning glow. I lifted my head slightly to look at my alarm clock. I didn't have to wake up for another hour, give or take a few minutes. Nobody else was awake yet, it was very quiet throughout the whole house. Not a sound could be heard, except for my own breathing. Any other day, I would have just fallen back asleep dreading the sound of my alarm to bring about another day. But today, in the early morning light, I decided to make an exception.
I slowly sat up in my bed, stretching as I did so. It was early in the morning, but I felt surprisingly well-rested. I stepped out of bed, slipped on my slippers, and proceeded to walk around the house. As I walked through the hallway, I heard the gentle noises of my family as they remained in their slumber. It was somewhat dark in the hallway, but it had just enough light where it wasn't very creepy and I could see where I was going. The peacefulness of the house was relaxing. I decided to take my little venture outside, so I went to towards the front of the house and opened the door.
The crisp wind hit me, and I felt goose bumps rise. I was wearing my favorite orange pajamas, which weren't the best choice of clothing. But I've already decided that this morning was going to be an unconventional one, where I would go by how I felt, even if only for a couple hours I would go wherever my feet would take me. It just so happened to take me outside.
I heard the chirping of birds, and it broke my train of thought. My attention was drawn to the rest of the property, the shrine that my family has been keeping. These buildings are old and dusty. As someone whose been cleaning them since as long as she could remember, there's nothing really special about them. But today, with the singing birds, brisk wind, and the glow of sun, the old shrine had a new elegance to it. I wondered, is this what it looked like to the old shrine keepers years ago when they looked out at it in the morning?
As I looked over the scene, my eyes rested on the tree that has been growing for over 500 years. I've been looking at this tree for a long time, but something about how it looked today made it stand out more than usual. The shrine held a glow, an aura, a certain type of magic to it that I can't really put my finger on. But whatever it is, in this moment I could almost feel a positive energy surging around the grounds.
I closed the door so to not let all the cold air in. I inhaled the last remnants of the outside air and sighed in content.
"Today is going to be a good day."
"Kagome, who are you talking to?"
I jumped at the sound of another voice besides my own. I turned around to see my mother in a pink robe, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
"No one, just making an observation out loud. So what are you doing up?" I asked, making my way towards her.
"I should be asking you the same question. I'm about to get started making breakfast." Mom said as she walked into the kitchen to collect the items she needed.
"You need any help" I asked, making a motion to get the frying pan.
"Oh no honey, I can't ask you to cook. At least, not on your birthday anyway." She said with a smile on her face.
"Thanks mom" I said wrapping my arms around her and squeezing her.
"Your welcome, and happy 15th birthday Kagome"
