We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

- t.s. eliot, "the love song of j. alfred prufrock"

It feels as though years have passed since he first stepped on this sand.

Off in the distance, he can hear the steady rushing of the waterfalls, cascading spray and sound down upon the tropical forest. The last group of playing children has finally been called inside, and their excited chatter fades until nighttime noise is audible. Insects, waves, the sea breeze; Tidus inhales deeply and closes his eyes.

"...it's been a while, ya?"

"Mm." Tidus nods and regards him before meandering towards the pier. The planks are rough beneath his legs, and he lets his feet dangle above the ocean. He's--they're blitzball champions: no need to fear water. Wakka's sandals skim the surface and send ripples expanding out into eternity.

Tidus idly muses that together, they resemble the sunset: bright orange, tan, lighter tan, yellow...

"...Nah."

"You say somethin'?"

He shakes his head at the question and his own thoughts. "Nothing important. S'okay."

The sun casts soft, gradually dimming light and warmth upon them; Tidus amiably takes his teammate's hand and squeezes once.

Wakka sits beside him on Besaid, and it's all he could want.
