She was at his side as soon as he collapsed. The sea crashed loudly, making it difficult for Rose to hear.
"My head …" he whispered, anguished. "The metacrisis… goes both ways…"
Out of nowhere, he screamed, his hands grasping his skull as though he were trying to hold everything in. She watched helplessly. He gulped for air. The word 'metacrisis' was meaningless, but he used to always speak like this — of things she couldn't define but could feel. The emptiness of what was to come engulfed her.
He died like a human, his single heart still, with her.
