Chapter one:
(Newts point of view)
There's that one boy who looks around my age. I wonder why he's here… Why I'm here.. They told me his name was Thomas. We all have made up names here. It's strange but we had to figure out what the names are from. Eventually a girl named Teresa seemed to know. She's been here longer than all of us. She studied a bunch of stuff, I guess. Most of our names are from scientists..
Thomas's name comes from Thomas Edison. My name, Newt, comes from Isaac Newton. Teresa's is from Mother Teresa. We were sent here because of the flare, a deathly virus that is extremely contagious. The flare makes people go insane. It is actually quite frightening.
Apparently, they need to figure out a cure for the flare. That would be the reason why we are all here. They just sent Alby into their trials. We are waiting to go into their trials at the moment. But for the months we wait, we study things on survival. It's not the best thing to do in your life, but I'd rather do all of this than go mentally insane.
Soon my memory will be wiped. I will be sent up to the first trial. I have 2 months left here. All they told us is that there will be a maze we must go through to get out. But there are these giant spider-like things in the maze that are quite frightening. The maze changes every night so it would probably be too difficult to get out.
I have a friend here named Minho.. He is probably the sassiest person I've met in my life. We live outside of Denver, I'm pretty sure. But most places in this world are damaged due to the sun flares. You were pretty lucky if you survived those.
I sort of miss my family, but my family no longer exists. My older sister died from the sun flares. My parents and I were on the subway out that time, luckily. But they eventually got shot by the darts that started the flare. Lucky for me, I didn't get shot. I was the only survivor from my part of the state. Eventually, WICKED (World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department) came and rescued me then brought me here.
As I'm sitting here, Minho comes in. He asks me what I am thinking about. I reply, "I sort of want to know why exactly we were chosen to find the cure for the flare.." Minho just came from one of the many meetings that you go to one month before you get sent up to the maze. They discuss why and what we are doing here. But they tell you all the plans throughout the trials.
He has trouble responding but eventually speaks it all clearly. He says, "All of the kids here are either immune or just haven't caught the virus yet. We are here so they can map out the killzone, the human brain. Apparently they throw a bunch of variables at you during these trials. Some real, and some fake. Even if they are fake, you can't tell. There are two groups of people in this project. Group A and Group B. Group B are the girls and Group A is obviously boys. We can talk more about it over the next month, but you will have to get these lectures when I leave for the maze."
I respond, "Do you know how long these will last?"
He begins to look very sad then says, "About 3 years"
