"Sins of Yesterday" by Sapphira Eleyne
Prologue "The light that failed"
Illinois 1969
The small girl lay in her bed and looked like the horses moved at her wall. Her father had brought along this special lamp when he returned from his last employment.
Normally the dimly light calmed her down, but not this time.
Her whole body hurt and she gasped for air.
When she thought of this evening, an icy shiver ran her back down, again. She was afraid, so much afraid.
She wants to stop it, because the whole situation was unbearable.
Although she was at least first five years old, it seemed to her, as if she had already lived her live.
In the night the little girl woke up.
Her chest hurt so much. Then she vomited and there were there these small bloody pieces, which looked like raw liver.
Carefully she rose from the bed and went towards the door.
She must prop up herself against the wall.
When she arrived at the door, the small girl opened it and she peered into the corridor. It was calm. So she sneaked to the room of her brother and slipped inside.
Her brother was immediately awake, when she touched him slightly.
He opened his eyes and there was his little sister.
In the weak light of the moon her face looked pale and there was something red in the corner of her mouth.
He switched on the light and was frightened of what he saw. His sister was pale like a ghost and then she fell on the ground.
The boy jumped out his bed and was at her side. Blood ran out of her mouth.
He ran in the room of his parents and woke them up. His father picked up his sister, wrapped her in a blanket and carried her to the car.
When the small girl opened her eyes again it was dark, with the only light coming from the streetlamp outside. Her eyes felt puffy and thick.
Everything still ached. There were voices she didn't know.
Then there was a comforting warmth stole over her. The voice she was imagining was so soothing so full of love.
The girl stretched her hand out and then there was nothing more than darkness, which covered her gently.
