Ignoring the flurry of spells whizzing by her body, Hermione Granger trooped on through the battle field. Hermione felt the sensation of magic running through her veins and her blood, which most of it she had lost. She had to keep going, and that was all she told herself as she marched on towards the duel that had managed to gather everyone's attention.

Minerva McGonagall, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Remus Lupin and his daughter, Kira Lily Lupin, were fighting Voldemort in an enthralling duel. She watched in anticipation as Kira shot a killing curse at Voldemort, she refused to call him Lord, and he stumbled. But only she, Harry and Ron knew that Voldemort was still invincible, for they had failed to destroy the last Horcrux, Slytherin's locket.

Remus crumpled to the ground, Kira fell next to him, Minerva crashed with the wall, and Kingsley was left fighting. But she knew it was a matter of time before he crumpled, too. Hermione rushed toward Remus and Kira and frantically began shaking them, but they only jerked with her hands. So she felt for their pulses, and they were not there.

"No!" She heard Harry scream as he raced over, Ron at his heels. He began frantically shaking Remus, whispering his name over and over. He moved on to Kira, his tears rolling like stones over his cheeks. Kira had been beside him through everything, just as Remus and Sirius had, as Lily and James had wanted to be.

They were losing, and now not only she knew it.

And before her eyes, a large light overcame the darkness that had overthrown the cheerfulness of Hogwarts. She screamed when the light died away, and where Remus and Kira had been, was an empty space.
