A Canceled Heist

He'd been planning the heist for months. It was to be his first international heist, and all that was left was a few weeks of on-site recon. However, he hadn't known that this heist would be the first one he would cancel.

Kuroba Kaito knew this city was home to a great detective. He even knew this detective was even more of a criminal than he, himself. He was prepared for the extreme levels of petty crime and street violence. He also figured he'd be able to avoid the really bad people, and he figured these really bad people would keep the great detective busy. After all, what was one flashy jewel thief with an oath of non-violence and who always returns his targets when compared to most of the psychopaths the great detective purportedly dealt with on a regular basis? Or so he thought.

He spent several weeks casing the area for entrance and escape routes, preparing plans upon plans for how he would go about this heist. He set a date and sent his notice. He was glad to find this city's task force was just as easy to infiltrate as the ones back home. He was able to keep up with the on-site changes to the target's security, and he watched in amusement as his detectives and his task force showed up and attempted to share information, cooperate, and show up the local force. The night before the heist, he was making final adjustments to his plans and was more than confident that this heist would go off without undue complications, but that was when the great detective made himself known.

Of course, the thief was in his civilian guise at the time. He hadn't broken any laws to get onto this rooftop, and he wasn't really doing anything illegal. If anyone wanted to know why he was watching the targeted building with those binoculars, he could claim he was a KID fan and was looking for possible escape routes. He'd already seen his detectives performing similar checks, but the great detective's words still mad his blood run cold in his veins.

"You're leaving too soon," he had said in the thief's tongue.

"I'm sorry?" was the thief's easy reply, not allowing his surprise at the detective's sudden presence to show.

"It's a process of elimination. Look at the arrival and departure dates of all visitors from Japan since your last heist, and the pool of suspects shrinks to a manageable size."

"I'm not following you…"

"Your father's death and 1412's disappearance are too close. It's not a difficult conclusion to reach."

Kaito didn't respond.

The detective switched to English, "I wouldn't do it, kid."

The boy twitched, and suddenly, the detective was no longer there.

The next morning, the head of the force assigned to preventing KID's heist found a small card on his desk.

"Sorry about the short notice," it read, "but my mother has suddenly come down with a critical illness--something having to do with bats--so I won't be able to make our scheduled meeting. --Kaitou Kid"
