So I'm trying to start writing again after two years. I know it's not my best work, but it's a start. Thank you to all my faithful followers.
I've been going through some things so I decided to write it in a oneshot. I do feel better after writing it. thank you for being patient with me. I know it doesn't exactly follow the game, but it helped.
I do not own Legend of Zelda or anything related.
The fairy watched the young man before her. She had been his friend and helper ever since the Great Deku Tree had put them together. The connection was almost immediate. They worked so well together and everything seemed to fit perfectly. Eventually she found that she fell in love with him.
She never saw it as a possibility and would never let herself see it as a possibility. She was a fairy and he was a human. There was no way he could love someone like her back; yet there she was, head over heels for this young man. He was kind and gentle. Tried to do what was right. Good at listening and made everyone feel like they were someone special. Every day she found something new to love about him. He wasn't perfect, but that didn't matter. She loved him for who he was and that he tried to do his best every day.
Then, it seemed that he returned his feelings. He was gentler to her, more affectionate. There was a special look in his eyes that seemed to be reserved for just her. There were times when she noticed him looking at other girls, but he never looked at them the way he looked at her; so she never felt jealous. Then they met the princess. She was different. Though he never looked at her differently than the other girls, she felt something different. She knew that the princess would be good for him and that he could like her, but he only looked at the fairy in a special way. Yet something nagged at the back of her mind, and it hurt every time she looked at the beautiful human girl.
She knew that the princess was really a better match for him. First of all she was human. She was sweet and caring. She was beautiful. She could make him smile and laugh.
Over time she saw his looks less and less around herself, and more and more around the princess. Eventually, he no longer looked at her in that special way. Her heart shattered as she realized that he could never have those kinds of feelings for her truly, but she was happy to still be able to help him and be a good friend. As he worried if the princess was ok during those times of darkness, she stayed close to him and spoke words of comfort. When he was injured from a battle she soothed his wounds and made sure he was safe and comfortable. With every struggle she stayed by his side, supporting him, comforting him, and being the best friend she could, all the while her heart shattered more and more each time. There were times when she thought that there was nothing left to hurt, then he would say the princesses name in that quiet, gentle way of his and the fairy's heart would remind her that it was there and broken.
As time went on she saw the love grow from the sidelines and she faded more into the background. Yet, it was ok. She loved them both very much and wanted them to be happy even if she wasn't part of the picture. After the final battle she knew that it was time. The little fairy watched the two from the background as they held each other. The final battle had been won, and the enemy was gone. Her time with her love was over.
With tears in her eyes, and a smile on her lips she slowly flew away from the happy couple. She would always be his friend and come when he needed her, but she no longer belonged at his side.
"Goodbye, Link. I love you."
