Desperation

"Dean, you have to promise me," Sam pleaded desperately in his drunken state.

Dean held out for another moment before he shook his head. "Alright."

Sam visibly relaxed. "Thank you." He flopped over on his side, passed out. Dean moved his legs onto the bed and Sam rolled over on his stomach face buried in the pillow.

Dean sat back on his bed. This was just too much. When he had told his brother that Dad wanted him to kill Sam if necessary, Dean had thought Sam would hit him. Instead, Sam left and almost got himself killed by another Hunter. Even now, Sam was still taking the news hard. He hadn't been the same since Lafayette, but neither had Dean.

Inside, Dean was torn. He was torn between his loyalty to his father and his loyalty to Sam. Dean knew his father would want him to kill his brother if there was no other way, and if it was any other psychic, Dean would have no problem with that. But this was different. This was Sam. There was nothing on God's earth that would make Dean even think about killing Sam. Hell, even if Dad was still alive and screaming at Dean to do it, he wouldn't be able to. The weight of the responsibility was just too great.

Dean stood and paced around the room, careful not to wake Sam. What would he do when the time came? Already they had encountered three crazy psychics. All three of them killed people close to them in messy ways. Would it give Dean enough motivation to kill Sam if he tried to do that? Sure he killed before, but that was different. Those were all monsters or demons, and he had saved others by killing. This was Sam, the brother he carried out of the fire over twenty years ago, the brother that came back to save him from being sacrificed to the apple orchard god.

"Life's a bitch," he muttered bitterly, knowing there was nothing really that he could do. Dean looked down at Sam one last time before he left the room and knew that no matter how desperate things became, he would never be able to kill his brother.

Hope you guys enjoyed my first foray into the Supernatural fandom! I just got into the show, and I'm only on season 2, so hopefully Dean doesn't seem too OOC to those of you who've seen all of the season. I just wrote this really quickly while watching the episode Playthings for the first time. Please leave me a review and tell me what you think!
