Colonel Roy Mustang lay face down on the cream-coloured sofa in his small apartment. He had just returned from being one of the groomsmen at Edward and Winry's wedding, although why Edward had chosen him for that role was beyond him. In any case, that was not what was bothering him at the moment. The thing currently eating him alive was how Fullmetal had managed to get married before he did. Roy was clearly the older of the two and much better looking (in his own opinion), but in some way or another, that pipsqueak of an alchemist had won Winry's heart before Roy even had a chance to think. Now, however, he seemed to have far too much time for thinking on his hands and thoughts of one of his subordinates, the one he'd had his heart set on for as long as he could remember, filled his mind to the point of bursting.
Among the thoughts roiling in his head were thoughts of how pretty her hair was when she wore it long, how warm her hands were when she would push him back to his desk to whittle down the stacks of paperwork, and how he had never seen a more gorgeous woman in his life. If only he could find some way to tell her how he felt…
Outside, the wind increased, and dark clouds rolled over Central Amestris. A heavy rain started to pound the roof over the distraught colonel's head. The sound momentarily snapped him out of his thoughts, but only succeeded in worsening his mood. He moaned into the pillow under his face. Why did being in love have to be so difficult?
After what seemed like hours, Roy sat up. He ran his hands through his hair in a pathetic attempt at taming it, and sighed. I have to tell her, he decided, but I can't just walk up to her and say, "Hey, I love you, do you want to go out with me?" He started to think about the things he had done for her. None came to him at first. Then…
Jean Havoc and Riza Hawkeye, pursuing Barry the Chopper's reanimated corpse…Gluttony interfering…Hayate, followed by Feury, showing up for support…but it isn't enough…and enter the colonel, accompanied by blazing flames, in the nick of time to save his subordinate…
Then the things she had done for him…
Word that Scar and the Elrics are engaged in battle reaches the colonel…Riza leaves to go back them up, but before she leaves, she gives explicit instructions for Roy not to leave under any circumstances…
Roy, consumed by vengeance…Riza, saying she is prepared to shoot if he doesn't snap out of it, but deep down knowing she couldn't live with herself if she did…
Faced by the golden-toothed doctor, mortally wounded…Riza will not allow Roy to perform human transmutation, even if it means she will die…
Exhausted and thoroughly confused, Roy stood up, stretched, and proceeded to his bedroom. Suddenly, he was interrupted by a knocking at the door.
Standing in the hall was Riza Hawkeye.
"Hello Roy," she said, "may I come in?"
Mustang was stunned. "You didn't call me 'sir'…or 'colonel'…"
Riza smiled. "No, I didn't. I shouldn't need to, seeing as this is an informal meeting."
Roy couldn't help but smile as he caught on to what Riza was getting at. "I suppose not. Would you like to come in, Riza?"
It was her turn to smile back at him. "I would love to." As she came in through the door, Roy put his arm around her shoulders, and together they went to sit on the sofa. Outside, the rain stopped, and the dark clouds pulled back to reveal a shining sun, and a brilliant rainbow.
Well, I don't know about you, but I am rather pleased with how this turned out. Stories like this are easier to write when you have a similar sort of pain in your own life you can draw from. Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed my story, and, if the urge overtakes you, please review! I love hearing your opinions!
