"Kid!" the harsh whisper cut into his sleep. He opened an eye blearily, trying to shake off the cobwebs of sleep.
He couldn't hold in a groan, "What is it, Patty?"
"I had another nightmare" she whined, clutching at the stuffed giraffe she held in her hands.
"What was it this time?" he asked, lifting up the covers so she could slip in beside him and cuddle into his chest.
"I don't wanna talk about it" she whimpered, her voice muffled by his white nightshirt. He stroked her hair comfortingly and tried to calm her down like Liz would do. For a moment he wondered why she hadn't gone to Liz. Patty sought comfort in her sister, not in Kid. But then he realized Liz was probably the reason for her nightmare. Even though Patty usually went to Liz, this still happened often. Patty had so many nightmares. The streets had been rough on her to say the least.
Kid waited for the fifteen year old to fall asleep before he slid out from under her grip, making his way to the door. He turned the doorknob and walked down the hallway. It was long, quiet, and eerie at night. Kid was surprised that Patti made it all the way down to his room without getting spooked. Even Kid felt a twinge of uneasiness as he went to open Liz's door. He could feel the moonlight on his back as he knocked ever so lightly on the black wood.
"Liz?" he called.
A groan came out in reply. He smiled a little and opened the door. Her room was close to pitch black, with no windows facing the moon her room lacked its milky light. But as he opened the door, it spilled in as though it were liquid onto her bed.
The giant blanket blob moved and turned over, hiding under a pillow. Kid walked to her side of the bed after closing the door, engulfing the room in darkness again. He nudged what he figured was her knee and she moved over a little bit so he could sit on the edge of the bed, "Patti had another nightmare" Kid said, loud enough so she could hear him under her pillow sanctuary, "I closed the door, its dark again."
Kid thought he saw Liz lift her head up. "What?" came the sleepy reply, "Then where is she? She always comes to my room when she has bad dreams"
"Yes, I know" Kid said, "Do you know why she'd come to me instead?"
"No. I mean, not in a bad way, but you're not exactly a comforting teddy bear" Liz said, sitting up.
"Yes, exactly" Kid said, "So, do you have any idea why? Did something happen between you two?"
"Well, we sort of had a small argument" she said softly.
"How small?" Kid asked.
"Actually it was really bad. Kid…I said some really terrible things to her…"
"Would you like to talk about it?" Kid asked. He had to hold in a gasp when she grabbed his hand that was trying to tuck in the covers around her sitting form.
"We just…I was angry at her for dropping all the vegetables on the floor and after that we just really started getting at each other…" she said, her other hand now on his chest. "It was really bad, Kid. I'm worried that we won't get through this one"
"Don't worry, Liz" Kid said, reaching up to squeeze the hand that was on his chest, "I know you will. And if you have a hard time I'll help you out"
"Thanks, Kid" she said. He moved a hand behind her neck and kissed the top of her head. He stood and made his way to the door to return to Patty.
