With much love & thanks, and cookies, to Laura who beta'd this and plenty of others, and who sits and lets me ramble for hours. And who lets me text her at 5am. 'Cause seriously, dude - who wouldn't love a friend like Laura? MWAH! Since it's Valentine's day and I'm giving you angsty fic, I'm being extra lovely to my beta 'cause she rocks my socks.
Oh yeah, this is directly after 2.02 'Grand Murder at Central Station'.
Love to all (see, I'm being nice!), xxx
Nothing Lasts Forever
I never thought that this day would
ever come;
when your words and your touch just struck me numb
Numb; the only word you could use to describe how you felt. Two words and your world crumbled. You'd already done something you vowed you'd never do, not again, and now your world was falling apart. Your 'family' were turning against you, your 'father' looked at you with ice in his eyes: no praise, no thanks, not even the tiny hint of a smile they used to hold.
You unclipped your badge slowly and slid it across his desk, desperate to turn back time, undo what you almost did, unsay what you'd said – even if only to yourself. You never thought this would ever happen. You never thought you could ever consider it; let alone get as far as you did.
You never thought you'd ever be fired; but those two words struck you numb and as you left the office, head hung in defeat and blinking away the tears you'd promised yourself never to cry, you suddenly realise that nothing lasts forever, anyway.
